What is a Mikvah?

A mikvah is a body or gathering of water that has a designated connection to natural water. The mikvah is designed specifically for immersion (see below), according to the rules and customs of Jewish law. It contains about 200 gallons of water.

What is special about the water in a mikvah?

Water is the primary source of all living things. It has the power to purify, to restore and replenish life. A mikvah must be filled with water supplied from a flowing source that has never been dormant, such as rainwater, fresh spring water, or even melted snow. The mikvah water is kept under strict hygienic control, cleaned daily and chlorinated, much like a swimming pool.

What is Taharas Hamishpacha – family sanctity?

The Jewish marriage sanctifies the union of husband and wife. Sanctification often involves a level of separation and Taharat Hamishpacha (also pronounced Taharas Hamishpocha) observance introduces times of separation and reunion as part of a cycle in married life. Separation begins with the onset of the menstrual flow (i.e. a woman’s period). It is a time when the husband-wife relationship can be expressed without physical intimacy. It is also a period of anticipation and preparation for mikvah immersion. The reunion which follows holds the highest potential for sanctity and appreciation in marriage.

How does one prepare for mikvah immersion?

Following a woman’s monthly menstruation, the woman counts seven "spotless" days. During this period, from the onset of menstruation until mikvah immersion, couples should refrain from physical contact (between husband and wife), including marital relations. Prior to immersion, a woman must cleanse herself thoroughly. She is required to immerse after nightfall.

Why should I go to the Mikvah?

Immersion in the mikvah is a Biblical commandment of the highest ordinance, equated with key commandments (called mitzvoth or mitzvos), such as Kashrus and Shabbos. Immersion is also a way of drawing G-d into your marriage, by making Him an integral part of it. Mikvah helps create a husband-wife relationship that is in a state of continuous renewal. With marriages failing daily, the laws of Family Sanctity may help you find fulfilment within a sanctified marriage that is caring, romantic and strong enough to last a lifetime.

Is The mikvah only used by women?

No, a Mikvah has various other uses:

  • It is the final stage of conversion to Judaism
  • It is used by men customarily at auspicious times, such as before Yom Kippur and a groom on his wedding day. Many men use it Erev Shabbat (shabbos), while some men even use the mikvah daily before prayer.

Complete understanding and observance of the laws of mikvah require in-depth woman-to-woman study and subsequent review in either a private or group setting. Knowledge and experiences are shared openly. At mikvah.org.uk we are happy to offer this service.
